Inuyasha: Inuyasha, the main star of the anime is half demon, half human. He possesses a human heart but strong demon like claws and strength. 50 years ago, he tried to obtain the Shikon stone, which can turn him into a full demon, but was stopped by the maiden who protects the stone: Kikyo.

Kagome: While helping her younger brother, Souta, search for their cat, Buyo, Kagome is pulled into a well by a centipede-demon. Being Kikyo's reincarnation, she had the Shikon no tama, jewel of four souls, inside of her stomach. She meets Inuyasha on the sacred God Tree, pinned against it by Kikyo's sacred Miko arrow. Kagome pulls it out, in a desperate attempt to stay alive, being that she was pinned to the tree, against IY, by the centipede demon. IY saves her, but wants to Shikon jewel, that came out of Kagome. But, Lady Kaede, Kikyo's younger sister, put prayer beads around his neck, causing IY to fall to the ground whenever Kagome says "Osuwari!" (sit.) In an attempt to get the jewel back from a crow demon, Kagome shoots an arrow at it, and it bursts into a bunch of shards. So, IY and Kagome search for the jewel shards together. Kagome has intimate feelings for IY.

Sango: Sango is a professional Youkai Exterminator. Her whole family (all except her brother) and the people in her village were killed by Naraku. She joined the Inuyasha team to kill Naraku and avenge for her family and village neighbors.

Miroku: A monk who likes women very much. Miroku is known as the indecent monk with an air hole in his hand, Naraku gave that hole to Miroku's grandfather, who is also indecent as well. This airhole will eventually suck Miroku in and make him disappear. Miroku wants to find Naraku, defeat him, in order to save himself and his future generations.

Shippo: Shippo is a young fox demon. His father was killed by the Thunder Brothers. In order to get revenge, Shippo tried to steal shikon stone shards from Kagome and Inuyasha, but since he's relatively weak, he got caught easily. Ever after, he's been traveling with the Inuyasha team, to defeat Naraku.

Kikyo: Kikyo is a powerful maiden who was assigned tasks to guard the shikon stone 50 years ago. She fell in love with Inuyasha and wanted to use the Shikon stone to turn Inuyasha into a full human. Unfortunately, she fell into Naraku's trap and died.

Naraku: Naraku is not a full demon, his original body was built on a man saved by Kikyo. Because of this, Naraku's being trying every way to get the Shikon stone, which can transform him into a full demon. Naraku is Inuyasha and his gang's greatest enemy in the series and is also extremely powerful. Since Naraku is consisted of numerous demons, he give birth to new demons later in the series.

Kagura: Kagura is a detachment off Naraku. Because Naraku's body consist of thousands of demons, he can give birth to demons, Kagura is one of them. Naraku has control of Kagura's heart and will absorb her back into his body the instant Kagura betrays her. Later on in the series, Kagura decided Naraku must die in order for her to obtain freedom and tried to scheme plans to kill him.

Kanna: Naraku's second detachment. She has a mirror that can suck in any human's soul, then using it to manipulate the human's body.

Hakudoushi: He is a baby first, but then he grow up. He is extremely powerful. He has the power to see into peoples' hearts and if he finds a speck of darkness in it, he can control them. He has powers like Naraku and has an attitude like him as well.

Sesshomaru: Sesshomaru is Inuyasha's older brother. Unlike Inuyasha, Sesshomaru is a full demon. In the beginning of the series, Sesshomaru fought with Inuyasha for a sword that their father, a powerfull demon, left for them. Sessmaru lost.

Rin: Rin was saved by Sesshomaru using the Tenseiga (it's the first time he used it). Ever after, Rin follows Sesshomaru everywhere like a younger sister. It's believed Rin brought senses of kindness to Sesshomaru's cold heart. Before Rin met Sesshomaru, Rin doesn't speak a word to anybody, mostly due to the shock she received after both of her parents died. But after she met the seriously injured Sesshomaru, helped him recover, then later was saved by him, Rin started to talk again.

Jaken: Sesshomaru's servant. Like Myoga the Flea, Jaken's not very brave either, but at least, he stays at the battle scene most of the time.

Kouga: The leader of a wolf demon gang. Since Kagura killed most of his gang in their first fight, he swore to kill Kagura. Kouga has Shikon stones embeded in his legs and can run faster than the speed of wind. Kouga and Inuyasha are rivals for Kagome. Kouga's gang members all respects Kagome and refers to her as the "gang lady - Kouga's girlfriend".

Ayame: Ayame is the wolf tribe leader's grand daughter. After the tribe got attacked by evil spirits. She came to find Kouga to help out. Kouga also promised to marry her many years ago. Unfortunately, Kouga has now found his new love (Kagome) and refuses to marry Ayame.
